Planner Safari #1: Sex Mall

Today we had our very first Planner’s Safari: a day for us Planners to get out of the office and into the real world.

Everyday I walk home, I pass by the tiny adult sex store on Wulumuqi Road. The sleepy face of the middle-aged owner sitting among the dildos and vibrators through the window. I wonder what she’s like, how she got there and what she thinks about her job.

Sex in China. We see it - the adult health stores, the DVD back rooms, the “barber shops”, the KTVs - but we don’t talk about it.

I decided to go to the source and made a trip to the Shanghai Sex Mall. That’s right, like me, you’ve probably read about it in Smart Shanghai.

It’s a 4 story unassuming grey building about a block away from Suzhou Creek. The building struck me as quite friendly - a swiveling door rotating under the main sign ‘Shanghai Health Center’. Two young giggling girls walk out with filled shopping bags. It wasn’t as dirty as I’d imagined nor as underground. Kids were running and playing on the escalators.

Shanghai Sex Mall Sex Herbs

The first two floors are filled with stalls selling Chinese medicinal products. Stall after stall sell everything healing from vitamins, herbs, echinacea, fish oil tablets to coiled snake skins, newts on sticks, moose antlers, and probably every variety of dried penis I’ve ever seen.

sex-toys

The third floor is where the magic is. Dildos, vibrators, blow-up dolls, dress-up costumes, you name it. It was a Wednesday afternoon and the place was pretty empty. There were a few men who seemed like they came knowing what they want, hit up one store and bought in bulk. They looked pretty shocked to see a foreign girl in there. Although I notice that all the packaging are of causcasian women.

The shop keepers were mostly women who were also the easiest to talk to. The men just chain smoked and stared and made me feel uncomfortable. But what surprised me was how open and blase the whole operation was. They could just have well been selling fake bags or watches. Could it be that sex in China isn’t as taboo as we think?

Me: “What kind of customers normally come in here?”

Lady: “Both men and women. Also foreigners.”

Me: “Don’t women feel embarrassed to buy sex toys?”

Lady: “What is there to be embarrassed about? All women need them.”

At the next stall, a 60 year old woman proceeds to try and sell me a foot long golden dildo with unappealing knobbly balls all over it. She tells me men that come in usually buy the blow up dolls because they are very ‘real’ and can be used at home.

There are counters filled with Viagra [Big Brother in Chinese] and the traditional Chinese herbal equivalents which, according to this woman, will last 3 days…

One of the most popular toys now for men is the EGG. The sleek Japanese design baffled me at first, but the lady assures me it’s handy enough for you guys to stick in your pocket and use on the plane! Wow.

tenga-eggs

Apparently there is now even a toy made for young girls to use in class which look just like earphones.

So, if you’re in need of a cultural sexcursion, check this place out.

Summer Jam 2010

We’re always busy. There are meetings to attend, clients to woo, decks to make and expense forms to file. After all, this is Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai and the work comes first.

Well on Monday, August 30th, the work came last.

Monday was a day where we didn’t work or stress or meet, a day without emails or con-calls. It was a day where we took a bus to the beach on a mission to get silly. And we did. We had water balloon fights, built sandcastles, played a bunch of competitive games and ended the day sitting around a bonfire on the beach.

Throughout the day, huge storm clouds threatened to piss on our parade, but with semi-cold beers in our hands, we looked up at the sky and said: “Bring it on, weather. This is Summer Jam 2010. And there’s no stopping us today.”

A big bear hug of gratitude goes out to the Summer Jam Committee and everyone that helped to make it all happen: Flora, Charinee, Grace, Tata, Celia, Kevin, Momo, Adrian, Rain, Roberto, Lloyd and Vic.

Weekend programming: GSPOLO Behind the scenes

In our last NSW GSPolo campaign we made a web film of an interactive soccer match. Here are some behind-the-scene photos of the interactive installation used in the shoot.

We developed the software in openFrameworks using the BLOB detection sample with our own particle system as the visualization.

We used an array of 25 infa-red LED matrices to illuminate the floor. (Thanks to Taobao)

The tracking object (the ball) was wrapped with reflexive tapes as the light source for detection.

A night-vision camera was used to track the ball’s motion with a hand-made visible light filter made of fully exposed negatives.

rosie

Rob Campbell的小猫Rosie:

Rob Campbell’s cat Rosie:

This is Rosie … she’s a Singaporean street cat that is the most spoilt and well-travelled cat on Earth. She’s 3 years old and yet in her short life, she has lived in Singapore, Hong Kong, San Francisco and now Shanghai … with no regard for the cost, time or hassle it has involved. She doesn’t like men, only eats dry food and will only drink water out of a ceramic bowl. She complains about everything, loves standing in front of the television and is committed to ruining my sleep. But I love her.

The Eyewriter: If only you could move your eyes

Some selfless friends, Mick and Caskey Ebeling, started a non-profit called Not Impossible Foundation, to help their friend, legendary L.A. graffiti artist Tony “TemptOne” Quan. Tony has ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), which slowly paralyzes the body until no physical movement is possible. As you can imagine, this really sucks. Right now he’s in a hospital bed in Los Angeles. His mind is completely lucid, but he can’t move any part of his body except for his eyes.

In April 2009, they brought together a group of amazing artists and innovators from Graffiti Research Lab and Open FrameWorks to make make a low-cost, open source, creative technology and communication tool. And it worked! The EyeWriter 1.0 was born.

Now they need to get this technology to other paralyzed people who need it: disable veterans, artists, writers, painters, etc.

Enter: Pepsi-Cola. (No offense to unquestionably superior product Coca Cola.) Pepsi has a grant program called “Refresh Everything” where they let anyone apply for funding for a good cause. Every month, you can vote for your favorite cause, and at the end of the month, whoever gets the most votes wins the funding.

They want to start by making 1,000 EyeWriters available to anyone who needs them, regardless of their income level or location.

Help by clicking here http://pep.si/bKlIiW to vote for The EyeWriter. It takes a minute to register, but it’s for a great cause (you can also sign in with Facebook.) The voting closes August 31, and you can vote once a day, every day. That’s the key…voting everyday!

Please pass this to your friends (or Tweet it, post it on your Wall, put it on your site, whatever…)

We need all the help we can get, thanks for your time and votesssssssss!

Weekend Programming: GoldFish Music Box

如果你想要试用版,请发邮件给我(francis.lam[at]wk.com)。

Updated my little goldfish sound toy over the weekend. It is a mobile app that can turn moving objects captured by the camera into music. I replaced the private API call getScreenImage() with the iOS4 counterpart, it works like a charm now! Send me an email (francis.lam[at]wk.com) if you would like to have a promo code.
