Richard Summers, a planner at Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai, has undertaken a research project to find out the hopes, dreams and feelings of people who are living in six of China’s fastest growing cities - Chongqing, Hefei, Anshan, Ma’anshan, Pingdingshan, and Shenyang.

l1155721

Over a period of 12 days, Richard backpacked through these 6 cities, discussing with passers-by, shop keepers, parents, kids and anyone else he met on his journey, how the rapid growth in population, income, and infrastructure has affected them and their outlook for the future.

l1155535

The result is Boomtown Stories… a collection of views, thoughts and considerations of over 50 people, all catalogued and cross-referenced for ease of use.

l1155465

This is not a formal research study, it’s a raw investigation of changing China by an English speaking planner whose boss told him he wasn’t allowed to pre-arrange any interviews, stay in a hotel or take a mandarin speaking colleague with him.

l115362211

“Big thanks to those who helped out, particularly studio, KK and Super for the site design, Rob for his persistence, and Tata for tracking down fixers in each city.” said Richard.

W+K Battle of the Wonton Masters W+K

I don’t know how you spent your Friday afternoon, but I doubt it was more amazing than W+K Shanghai’s Wonton Making Competition.

At noon, everyone rushed toward the third floor kitchen, either to join the competition or to spectate. Thirteen WKers competed in the “Fastest Wonton Maker” category, in which the first person who finished wrapping 15 wontons would win, or the “Best Looking Wonton” category—where Jason, Achilles, Ayi, and three WKers would judge the most delicious and aesthetically pleasing wonton. With Ayi at the head of the table and six competitors on each side of the table, the Wonton Contest commenced.

wk1

Flour, water, and pieces of wonton filling began flying through the air as the competitors worked furiously to triumph in this iron chef battle. As the table became filled with wontons of different shapes, sizes, and provincial styles, our kitchen also became increasingly packed with WKers joining the festivities and cheering for their friends.

wk2

After twenty minutes of fierce competition, the battle for both categories came down to Fang Yuan and Julie. Our managing director, Jason, suggested a lightening round tie-breaker: first WKer to make three of the best looking wontons wins!

wk3

“Fang Yuan, Fang Yuan!” cheered some WKers; “Julie! Julie!” supported others.

“Fang Yuan, Fang Yuan!”。。。“Julie! Julie!”

wk4

And these winning wontons belong to…

wk5

Fang Yuan!
wk7

In a twist of events, the WKers suggested Fang Yuan compete with Ayi to see who could make three dumplings the quickest. We all suspected Ayi was a secret expert, but no one foresaw the following situation: By the time Fang Yuan finished making one wonton, Ayi had already made three!

wk8

Fang Yuan puts the crown on the true W+K Wonton Master, Ayi!

wk6

Official competitors Fang Yuan and Julie—who both performed excellently—not only gained the reputations as W+K’s elite wonton makers, but also left with some awesome prizes.

wk9

In the end, everyone won because we all had heaping bowls of fresh, delicious wonton.

Running in a Sea of Orange

I had never witnessed so many people gathered at 7:15 a.m. on a Sunday before. Thousands upon thousands of people, most of whom sported neon-orange t-shirts, arrived at the World Expo China Pavilion for Nike’s 10K Lunar Run. I, along with twenty WKers, squeezed through the crowd with our bright red W+K Shanghai banner fluttering in the wind.

run1

Promptly at 8:00 a.m., the announcers began a countdown to run: five, four, three, two, one…Go! The crowd surged forward enthusiastically, only to find it was too congested to break out into a full run for the first five minutes. Gradually, however, everyone began to disperse into the wide, empty road. I don’t run often, but this felt like the perfect running weather: the air was clean, crisp, and accompanied by a comfortable breeze.

run2

Within the first half-hour, I passed by several World Exposition buildings: from the twisted, snake-like Spain Pavilion to the amusement park themed Netherlands Pavilion. Today’s 10K run is probably the first time since the 2010 World Expo that this area has been filled with nearly 10,000 people. In addition to admiring the surrounding buildings, I also enjoyed people-watching: some ran passionately ahead whereas others jogged slowly; some wore athletic attire while others wore jeans. I saw an elderly woman with a full head of white hair amongst the mob, running more vigorously than her far-younger counterparts. I even noticed a couple jogging with their infant in her baby carriage!

The atmosphere was indescribable. The enthusiasm of the runners, the sideline cheerleaders encouraging us to “keep going,” the camera men camped on top of lifts, and the occasional music trailing in the air—all of these elements contributed to a runner’s high. Perhaps the most memorable moment was approaching the white bridge, nine kilometers into the run. From afar, all I could see was its pearly white arcs sandwiched between the remarkably blue sky and a sea of orange. Those condensed, tiny-specks of runners were a sign—the race was almost over.

run3

Turning the corner into the last few hundred meters was thrilling. The sideline cheering, which became increasingly louder, and the finish line, which became closer within sight with every step, gave my body a sudden burst of energy until I surged forward to finish the race. I knew no one was watching so I lifted both arms in triumph: I felt relieved, elated, and accomplished.

Thank you, W+K Shanghai for an unforgettable experience!

W+K Shanghai’s “Special Single’s Day” W+K

Love is in the air! November 11, which has been celebrated unofficially as “Singles’ Day” throughout Asia since the early 1990s, is an informal holiday for those not involved in committed relationships. However, this year’s Single’s Day, which fell in numerical harmony with 2011 to make 11/11/11, was truly special for the WKers.

Grace Shao, one of W+K Shanghai’s digital producers, was proposed to by her boyfriend in the office on 11/11/11. While a handful of her boyfriend’s friends scrambled to arrange candles into the shape of a heart and sprinkle rose petals across the office, a bunch of WKers distracted Grace until the preparations were complete. The lights were dim; the atmosphere quiet. As Grace made her way down the steps, her favorite Chinese song began playing in the background and a man in a cartoon costume slowly approached her, got down on one knee, and proposed. “Say yes, say yes!” her coworkers chanted until they heard her happily announce, “Yes!” Everyone began clapping, cheering, and congratulating the newly engaged couple.

14

22

32

Festivities continued through the night, as forty WKers made their way to the Jing Jiang Tower Hotel for their coworkers, Fang Yuan and ex-WKer, Keith’s wedding. It was a beautiful celebration filled with laughs and love, family and friends.

42

51

The pronunciation of the numbers “11/11/11” is similar to the Chinese idiomatic expression “one life, one lifetime” which means “forever.” On behalf of the WKers, we want to congratulate both couples and wish them lifetimes of love and happiness!

There’s always something to smile about总有一些事情值得微笑

Hi,

If you haven’t heard, Thailand is now experiencing its worst flooding in decades. A third of the country is affected and the floods are now threatening Bangkok.

I don’t want to depress you with the facts but if you’d like to know more, here’s a good article

So… Charinee and I are donating money to a foundation that is contributing boats, medicine, food, and rescue teams. The foundation is a private one, managed by a friend and businesswoman - not government-related – so the cash should be managed efficiently.

In case you’d like to contribute, there are two donation boxes.

One is a normal donation box, which will be collecting funds till Friday next week.

The other one has magic powers. If you donate here, every 50 RMB gets you a lucky draw ticket to win a Thai buffet for six, which you can choose to have at the office OR while watching any movie of your choice projected on a screen at Achara’s place (also known as ‘The Acharaplex’). Everyone is welcome to participate. The ‘winner’ will be announced at next Friday by email, so come by before that if you’re interested.

See Exhibit A:

It’s also a proven fact that the act of giving makes people happier.

Finally, we’re leaving you with a photo to remind us that there’s always something to smile about, even in times of crisis (as Thais are known for, ha!)

I attended the “Chinese Characters 24 Hours” event held by GDC in Guangzhou last Saturday. I was so glad to share some works on Chinese typography by W+K Shanghai. As it’s my first time speaking in front of a large crowd, I was kind of nervous. Fortunately, I didn’t pay much attention to it because the other speakers’ talks were so fascinating that I felt mesmerized. The talks went well and the whole activity was great. I would like to thank everyone for his/her support of W+K Shanghai’s work. I would also like to thank our outstanding designers for the effort and passion they put into our typography designs.
